The Brand New Explora Journey – experienced by Louise Haughey

I sailed from the UK on board the new luxury ship Explora, although owned by MSC it is nothing at all like their ships, this really is luxury.

From the UK I sailed for 4 nights to Newcastle, Liverpool, and Scotland. The entire ship is luxury, not in an opulent over the top way, but sheer class. Everything is spacious for the super luxurious spacious cabins, which all have balconies. It was wonderful to find a bottle of champagne in the cabin and this is for all cabin types. The ship, although large with 14 decks, can only accommodate 922 passengers so it never feels crowded. The dining is exceptional with guest chefs, and 6 amazing restaurants to choose from. The food truly is world class and that includes the buffet. We sampled some wonderful whiskeys, in one of the bars, of which there are 12 on the ship, from a quiet space and or you can sit in another enjoying the piano being played. There is entertainment on board from live bands to acoustic sets, many of which a truly enjoyed on an evening. The spa was also amazing just like everything on this ship and throughout the day you could get involved in a yoga class or go swimming.

This ship is also child friendly, but you would think it was adult only, the child area was staffed until 10pm every night with lots of activities.

River Seine Cruise with Ambassador Cruises – Daniel Wilson, Cruise Development Manager

I have just experienced a 6 Night Ambassador cruise onboard Ambition.

Ambassador Cruises are the UK’s newest cruise line and offer 2 ships which are small ships.

Prior to sailing with Ambassador, I didn’t know what to expect, I have previously only sailed on a couple of small ships and I had the complete wrong impression in my head.

Food was certainly better than expected, I was expecting just average meals with a gala meal to boot but far from this the quality was excellent, meals were different to other cruise lines e.g. the breakfast is buffet in the main dining room but food was very good & Lunch had an A la carte and buffet option but evening meal was A la carte.

Cabin sizes were very good, we had a premium Junior suite which had balconies which were huge! We were able to all cabin types and the sizes were very good from Inside to Suites.

Staff, all I can say was wow! They really was the biggest welcome at sea remembering names, drinks & cabin numbers, so friendly even at 01:30 in the morning when we did the muster drill !

Prices on board for drinks are reasonable £6.50 for a cocktail and around £4.50 for a pint, speciality dining was around £17pp and the saffron restaurant was amazing.

Gratuities are expected to be paid unless you on a pre-pay package which is the cheapest way to pre-pay grats. Ambassador has 2 prices one without anything and one with the top drinks package this is by far the best prices and on some cruises the drinks package works out around £15.50 pppd this also includes staff gratuities. If you don’t choose this at time of booking the drinks package works out around £38.95pppd but again this also includes the gratuities.

Entertainment: - The shows are organised by an outside company, they was amazing again adding to the value, this compliments the quizzes, bingo, Karaoke and live bands or quiet classical musical bars.

Who is best to travel with this river cruise line ? Ambassador focuses on the over 55’s adult only, they do however have a few multi-generational cruises during the summer. I would say that the size of the ship 1300-1600 passengers which is around the same size of the Fred Olsen ships and the adults only ships with P&O, makes Ambassador strong competition and one to consider.

New York - The City that never sleeps.

Ellie from our Hull office has been jetting off to New York and Las Vegas to find out more about what these two famous cities in America have to offer and why people return to them.

From flying direct to JFK Ellie spent 2 nights in New York followed by 2 nights in Las Vegas. Whilst in New York I stayed at the Civilian Hotel, which is in the Theatre district. Every room in this hotel offers views over the city, plus it's within walking distant to Times Square.

A great place for drinks and views is the Virgin Hotel with it's roof top bar, and a great view of Empire State Building which is even more stunning at night when it is illuminated!

If you are up for an early starts the Empire State at sunrise, is breath-taking. The Summit One, Vanderbilt is new with its multi-sensory experiences, mirrored rooms and various art pieces, I've never seen anything like it!

Times Square, really does live up to its hype with high-end stores, restaurants and bars. Not far from there is Rockefeller Centre, with its famous Christmas Tree and ice rink, it was just reminded me of the film Home Alone.

For sunset we headed to the Edge, It has unobstructed views over New York City, as well as the glass floor that you can step onto - if you feel brave enough. Or if abseiling is your thing you can from the Edge maybe one to add to the bucket list!

The next morning we headed to Central Park, it is a really peaceful environment in the middle of such a vibrant, bustling city.

The highlight of my trip was 100% the Empire State Building at sunrise, the views were breath-taking.

Ellie's tip for New York: Wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking! Buy a city pass as this is a really good way to see multiple attractions for a good price.
